Synopsis
Amid an international crisis, Kate Wyler, a career diplomat, lands a high-profile job she’s not suited for, with tectonic implications for her marriage and her political future. The producers convinced the American and British governments to let them use real-life locations as filming locations for the series, including the brand-new American embassy (in Nine Elms), which opened in 2018. Britain allowed filming inside the office of the foreign secretary, an honor rarely granted to any film or movie production, especially an American one. The only location that wasn’t available was Winfield House, the royal residence of the American ambassador.

Although it’s accurately described as occupying the largest residential plot (11 acres) in London outside of Buckingham Palace, the producers used a country house outside the city for filming purposes. Oh my! Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger of massive proportions. Season 2 nearly gave me a heart attack in the final minutes of Season 2.
Boy, was I wrong
I don’t know if my heart can handle a Season 3. Initially, I thought it would be a slow, low-key political drama. Maybe another kind of *feel good* TV drama like Madam Secretary. The Diplomat will have you on the edge of your seat every episode.
Watch them like a starving animal
This is political theater at its best. It’s even more brutal than my wildest dreams. And even if it’s only 1/10th true to what ACTUALLY goes on in US politics and the various agencies (CIA, Secret Service, Diplomacy), it’s still a wild ride. Keri Russell is once again in a strong female lead role that reminded me why I loved her performance in “The Americans” so much. She’s excellent!
