MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy about Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan who is at odds with her family over the death of her best friend from the Army, Zoe (Natalie Morales). Despite the help of her veterans’ group counselor (Morgan Freeman), the love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and an unexpected love interest, Merit’s cozy, unlikely friendship with Zoe protects the duo from the world. That is, until Merit’s grandfather (Ed Harris), who is ensconced in the family’s ancestral lake house, starts to go wrong and needs the one thing he refuses to give up… help. It’s essentially a buddy movie about a complicated friendship, a fractured family, and the complexities of grieving.
