MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama about Merritt (Sonequa Martin-Green), a US Army veteran from Afghanistan who finds herself at odds with her family over Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend. Despite the persistence of her VA counselor (Morgan Freeman), the strict love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the easy arrival of an unexpected love interest, Merritt’s warm and dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the duo from separating from the world. That is, until Merritt’s grandfather (Ed Harris), who is staying at the family lake house, begins to lose his way and needs what he doesn’t want to give up: help. It’s basically a buddy movie, about complicated friendships, broken families, and the complicated ways of dealing with loss.
