I have this nice monster routine now

Synopsis

After her life falls apart, quiet actress Laura Franco finds her voice again when she encounters a terrifying yet strangely charming monster living in her closet. A romantic comedy-horror film about falling in love with your inner rage. Filmed at The Ritz and mostly in New Jersey. Monster: Too bad you got your ass kicked. I think you would find it very, well, creepy. Featured in Amanda the Jedi Show: The BEST and Weirdest Movies You (Mostly) Haven’t Seen Yet | Love Lies Bleeding (2024). I didn’t want to see this movie in theaters, at least.

It was impressive, and Brielle Hubert, Sarah Dawn Hamlin, Matthew Simonelli, and the makeup department deserve credit

I was going to wait for it to come out for streaming when, surprisingly, I went to AMC’s Screen Unseen for the first time and it was the movie they decided to play. It wasn’t bad the first time with this unique action, and I can’t say it’s a bad romcom. There are a lot of things that hold it back, but not enough to take away from its charm. To start with the positives, Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey had great (most of the time) chemistry and gave amazing performances as Laura and Monster. Without them, this movie would have succumbed to the onslaught of constant flaws, but Barrera and Dewey pulled it through the finish line. The movie wasn’t all that funny, despite being a romcom – come on – but there were plenty of laugh-worthy moments, and one that made me laugh. I also thought they nailed the Beast’s makeup, costumes, and set design, specifically when it came to playing Laura’s ex-boyfriend, Jacob, in the costume.

First, despite Barrera’s determined performance, Laura isn’t entirely convincing

The last positive I can say is that it has a charm that can be seen from a mile away. That’s the main reason I can appreciate the positives more than the negatives. Regardless of their issues, their hearts are in the right place. While I think it’s a decent watch, the negatives are noticeable and still worth mentioning, but I’ll keep them as simple and sweet as possible, although I may feel like criticizing the film more than it deserves – so you know. She screams and whines a lot throughout the film – of course, she’s addressing her breakup with Jacob and her cancer diagnosis, but it starts to get annoying in the first ten minutes. That’s a shame, because Laura is the main character, the person we’re supposed to root for. She’s also incredibly, if a little unrealistically, naive about the fact that Jacob is Mr.

Speaking of imbalance, the movie as a whole is

Wrong, enough to make Monster point out his obvious flaws at multiple intervals. Speaking of Monster, the relationship between him and Laura is unbalanced. By that I mean, for the most part, they felt like bickering step-siblings rather than actual potential romantics. There are moments where they felt like lovers, sometimes to a ridiculous extreme, and they really excelled in a good way. Still, I wasn’t impressed with how they executed their relationship. It wants to be a cliché romantic comedy, at times a cheesy drama, at other times a serious romantic drama, and at times a horror movie. As for the horror movie angle, aside from the makeup, Monster acts normally, aside from the growling and throwing of objects.

Again, it’s not perfect

Why couldn’t they do what “Lisa Frankenstein” didn’t and never took the story seriously? In conclusion, “Your Monster” isn’t a movie that requires you to throw out everything you do and see in theaters. It’s easy to wait for streaming, but it might be worth watching if you like romantic comedies. I can count myself among the fans of the genre, and while I don’t think it’s a perfect movie trip, it’s deeply flawed but unexpectedly charming. Technically, the performances, set design, costumes, and makeup of Monster earn it an easy 7/10 technical score.
